I am teaching lessons as part of working for LCTS and it's a blast! It's incredibly rewarding to help others learn and enjoy horses. The creativity in selecting and designing riding exercises is neat, as well as having to customize each interaction to the rider and horse on that given day. As a plus, it surely has improved my riding.<br />
<br />
I would love to get your suggestions and advice on giving lessons. Perhaps things such as:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>your favorite types of lessons, and why</li>
<li>specific exercises or activities </li>
<li>mounted games</li>
<li>out-of-saddle homework or other activities</li>
<li>suggestions for teaching certain types of riders/learners</li>
<li>any other general or specific advice or suggestions</li>
</ul>

<br />
But many of us do not. Enter your smartphone! With just a few little gizmos, you could be in business to photo or video yourself while riding!<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">We're a work in progress lol.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<b>Step 1: Materials</b><br />
<br />
You'll need:<br />
<ul>
<li>A smartphone. I have an iPhone6.</li>
<li>A wireless shutter remote. I bought <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NS964SM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1">this one</a> for ~$5.</li>
<li>A flexible tri-pod. I bought <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007NFJN0I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1">this one</a> for ~$5. </li>
</ul>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA_B_DySL1PpCFUQJ-4nGX81_1NXQE7Vx97IMGK6uzRTnaP5qflhTsce9TplupUlIAsB-lH-nnLMuGyYwCX1HVZnRe0aIWiQkZN3w7XKfBLQ9kUh53YRoto8Cean2ROFH5h_cWBEPuCUaF/s1600/IMG_0855.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA_B_DySL1PpCFUQJ-4nGX81_1NXQE7Vx97IMGK6uzRTnaP5qflhTsce9TplupUlIAsB-lH-nnLMuGyYwCX1HVZnRe0aIWiQkZN3w7XKfBLQ9kUh53YRoto8Cean2ROFH5h_cWBEPuCUaF/s200/IMG_0855.JPG" width="141" /></a> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirNPyZRSTqDAIGy6EIWNsCa90_8sglK5jx06Tk4tol1oCDvXVGZVkzMs_dOX3QhOACFLMhoAPtSvlo5z9nhvdghEzgF2X-KRAD8aFAu-DLUsnc-Pt4_EvrQ5Ryes5nOI-jdU9LrFbbgL5V/s1600/IMG_0974.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirNPyZRSTqDAIGy6EIWNsCa90_8sglK5jx06Tk4tol1oCDvXVGZVkzMs_dOX3QhOACFLMhoAPtSvlo5z9nhvdghEzgF2X-KRAD8aFAu-DLUsnc-Pt4_EvrQ5Ryes5nOI-jdU9LrFbbgL5V/s200/IMG_0974.JPG" width="190" /></a></div>
<br />
Note: these gizmos had fine reviews, but they are cheap and I doubt they'll last very long. One little horsey nibble and they'd be done. There are more heavy-duty ones available worth considering.</div>
<div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Step 2: Set Up</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The wireless shutter remote connects to your smartphone via bluetooth, and is compatible with most phones' built-in camera. Or there are compatible camera apps you can download if needed. I attached an extra-long rubber band to my remote to help prevent me from losing it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The beauty of the flexible tri-pod is that it can attach to rails, posts, and jump standards. Or you could set it up on top of a mounting block or plastic chair seat. You could play with angles and get all artistic if you like. </div>
<div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Step 3: Action!</b></div>
<div>
<br />
For video setting, just click the button to record, ride on, then click button to stop recording. Or in photo setting, just click to snap photos. It does take some trial and error. For example, both these next photos are screenshots from video that was mistakenly taken upside-down!<br />

Our barn has held up pretty well, and there's few things lovelier than a bright morning after some rain.<br />

The creek behind our facility is dry most of the year, but fills up from the rain and provides a great schooling opportunity. All the horses in training at LCTS have gone knee-deep in the river.<br />

Well the second half of 2016 passed by without any blogging. Such is life sometimes, but here's the summary:<br />
<br />
My husband was severely injured on the job, and I became a medical secretary/chauffeur/caretaker. He is still recovering, albeit slowly.<br />
<br />
I have a new job - and it's the best job ever! I am working at the barn for my trainer. =) What started as an exchange of lessons for help turned into a real opportunity as her business expanded. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Keeping it colorful on a client horse, and cheesin' with the boss at a show!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
I also help retrain and rehome ex-racehorses for the <a href="http://www.tbrci.org/">Thoroughbred Rehab Center</a>. West Coast friends: I'm your new hookup for some really talented horses!<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">First ride on this mare - she was the first to get adopted from our group!</td></tr>

<br />
<br />
Hannah is doing wonderfully. She continues to be sweet and patient but also game and joyful. We both had a blast in our second horse trial together last fall. We have become a really good team.<br />

<br />
This should be the final catch-up post to bring you current.<br />
<br />
A few months ago I stopped working. Taking time off has been nice. I don't currently have a timeline for returning to work. I'm taking time to heal, and am grateful for a husband who not only supports this, but suggested it to begin with.<br />
<br />
I'm enjoying being a housewife. Cooking and cleaning and running errands is a lot less stressful when you have all day to do it. I'm also spending much more time with family, visiting friends, and doing projects that make me happy.<br />
<br />
I'm spending A LOT of time at the barn. I'm assisting my trainer part time in exchange for lessons, which is good for the budget and amazing for my soul (and riding skills!). I get to groom and ride a number of wonderful horses. It truly is awesome and I want to do it forever, but we'll see.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-q1QPb6zJNZWrRLp0ZI7V7qNGcLTp000A9jBcMFG3lrDDiKare18Acg6SRtYuMg9iRSo3FEusqO5t3bZtNGP3NkR-U5UGXEJSe-Nmb_baKepj9SQNnzNxcAC1Ix9-JqP_qfSicwxw1ay5/s1600/IMG_0205.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="318" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-q1QPb6zJNZWrRLp0ZI7V7qNGcLTp000A9jBcMFG3lrDDiKare18Acg6SRtYuMg9iRSo3FEusqO5t3bZtNGP3NkR-U5UGXEJSe-Nmb_baKepj9SQNnzNxcAC1Ix9-JqP_qfSicwxw1ay5/s400/IMG_0205.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Hannah is amazing. She is just perfect. I constantly think that I must have saved children from a burning building in a past life to have the blessings that I do, and Hannah is at the top of the list. She is sweet, snuggly, has a sense of humor, and is totally game for everything. Plus she is talented as all get out.<br />
<br />
I haven't done any showing since that HT last August. I've done some more XC schools, and its been a "3 steps forward, 2 steps back" kind of thing with my confidence. I'm not in any rush; it takes what it takes.<br />
<br />
I don't have any goals right now, but I'm starting to get the itch for showing. We shall see what I can swing!<br />

The other weekend I rode in a clinic with Dr. Christian Schacht. I've audited and clinic'd with him previously; he always refreshes and re-energizes my enthusiasm for dressage. This time I took away several nuggets about using my body more effectively and subtly. Here are my main takeaways:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEYKkBoKhfVHHXbUsAA85gTsvw46StTg18woccr7Ss3dEcTg13g7pzISSOtPyPQsHtQulLkFmIbIcpAUAw8QMS6rIkHa5ayeQutAz5Sxy2ftt7mC0j-AVdrNLunTXdF-97wdXSL5QSw_-M/s1600/A-IMG_0685.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="221" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEYKkBoKhfVHHXbUsAA85gTsvw46StTg18woccr7Ss3dEcTg13g7pzISSOtPyPQsHtQulLkFmIbIcpAUAw8QMS6rIkHa5ayeQutAz5Sxy2ftt7mC0j-AVdrNLunTXdF-97wdXSL5QSw_-M/s320/A-IMG_0685.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvzyuknN-l6hIYjAmt68v68mCAeSNkDh4G0us3fcicLi0qUikQcM549NXpH88pxbRtzV1fVbt2jXF8-Slhw2pR7IYQ1JlHKiN5qm_c8BpoBdsWeYZT84A8d5tBDBzLKWsWKjgqvT-APOCC/s1600/A-IMG_0690.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvzyuknN-l6hIYjAmt68v68mCAeSNkDh4G0us3fcicLi0qUikQcM549NXpH88pxbRtzV1fVbt2jXF8-Slhw2pR7IYQ1JlHKiN5qm_c8BpoBdsWeYZT84A8d5tBDBzLKWsWKjgqvT-APOCC/s320/A-IMG_0690.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At the trot, do not squeeze with both legs at the same time. Rather, do one leg at a time, alternating in rhythm, that goes with (not against) the movement of the horse's rib-cage. Alternatively, you can use inside leg only.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The down transition from canter should be heavy outside seat, with minimal hand.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On a circle, look out over your horse's outside ear. Point your bellybutton in the direction of your horse's flexion.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This post is about Hemie, the wonderful OTTB I had the pleasure of owning for 3 years. If you're my Facebook friend, you may already know that he died. Here is the full story.<br />
<br />
Hemie was <a href="http://eventingincolor.blogspot.com/2015/04/officially-rehomed.html">rehomed in early 2015</a> through the adoption group I got him from. I loved him but he became too much for me to handle safely and we (trainer, husband, friends, and I) felt it best to get him partnered with a professional or a much more experienced amateur than myself.<br />
<br />
He landed at an eventing barn in the San Francisco area. I sent the trainer his radiographs, a complete health record, and all of my contact info so I could always be a safety net for him. After a few months, the trainer let me know that Hemie had moved on to another eventing barn in the SF area. I was bummed the first barn didn't work out - I was told that the gal who was riding him just couldn't commit to horse ownership (??). But the new barn was at a <i>really </i>nice facility and well respected trainer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipIUmFZxZ1n-hSMQIFP9xcgRdy-OMQOIEzdMko2YVqo7HOBIijpKIp8bYBhke6n5L6-WY3Iz4Qasnfoyq8p0IuwfpkS5ACVwpOYQ6fwqMLbNDjZw3nSllW6XTT_kN0Tz9Eb92upwg0O3kj/s1600/IMG_0790.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipIUmFZxZ1n-hSMQIFP9xcgRdy-OMQOIEzdMko2YVqo7HOBIijpKIp8bYBhke6n5L6-WY3Iz4Qasnfoyq8p0IuwfpkS5ACVwpOYQ6fwqMLbNDjZw3nSllW6XTT_kN0Tz9Eb92upwg0O3kj/s640/IMG_0790.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I talked to Barn #2 trainer and liked him. In October 2015 I was going to the SF area, so I called the trainer to arrange a barn visit. He informed me that Hemie had moved on some time back (wasn't specific) to a gal in Santa Cruz. He said he'd have to get back to me with her contact info.<br />
<br />
I was upset to hear of this. Of course, I wanted Hemie to quickly find a new long-term partner, not bounce around from barn to barn.<br />
<br />
I was told he was at a kids' lesson barn and was renamed "Teddy" but didn't get the contact info. The holidays rolled around, and I was struggling with mental illness. Ultimately my trainer and the adoption group had to step in with Barn #2 trainer to get the new contact info.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMVpBHaLHnRjYVlsUNAsSAGV_LS7b-d294U6R0BJNrMyAz4hqJYgDEUWMgwBzKRmr1IRNAws5-ec8HKtpJH0F5jmA_2im5twbet3XIPq9QbJv4_NDijF4cht9rXsebD2ad8RhjqJQB-pzH/s1600/P3310369.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="590" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMVpBHaLHnRjYVlsUNAsSAGV_LS7b-d294U6R0BJNrMyAz4hqJYgDEUWMgwBzKRmr1IRNAws5-ec8HKtpJH0F5jmA_2im5twbet3XIPq9QbJv4_NDijF4cht9rXsebD2ad8RhjqJQB-pzH/s640/P3310369.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
In the new year I had more energy to dedicate to tracking down Hemie. Finally we got the info and called Barn #3, only to discover Hemie had been there just 1 month and had already moved on. Predictably, Hemie wasn't suitable as a kids' lesson horse. She didn't know where he went, but gave me the hauler's info.<br />
<br />
So now I called the hauler. Apparently he had known Hemie since Barn #1. He got back to me fairly quickly with the info for Barn #4.<br />
<br />
At this point I was getting very concerned with all the bouncing around and was discussing the idea of getting him back with my husband. Maybe I could do a better job of finding him a suitable match.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAAq8eNGyIOcQuAXJ_lpYgHqx2jRDFGCE5giy0GxNsQvuBXWDjsOHoA6_I6iYr443aElNKYmUYB_NTAayqM28tcTjPjchwQfZiaiHKLvw76MK4YlttM4n3t0TJ5C7FuPdVUXnvv9yFZSxy/s1600/P3310400.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="422" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAAq8eNGyIOcQuAXJ_lpYgHqx2jRDFGCE5giy0GxNsQvuBXWDjsOHoA6_I6iYr443aElNKYmUYB_NTAayqM28tcTjPjchwQfZiaiHKLvw76MK4YlttM4n3t0TJ5C7FuPdVUXnvv9yFZSxy/s640/P3310400.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Barn #4 was another eventing barn, and also only had him briefly. The trainer said that "he was in need of a lot of positive training" which she had given him for a few weeks before moving him along. I tried not to freak out deciphering that.<br />
<br />
Barn #5, yet another eventing barn, specialized in training and resale of horses, with lots of TB experience. That looked promising. I reached out to the trainer on FB, only to be told he "was no longer available". When she realized I was just trying to track him down, not buy him, she told me that he had died.<br />
<br />
She was trailering him to the vet along with some other horses in order to get him some injections. While in the parked trailer at the vet, he flipped out and gravely injured himself, requiring euthanasia. None of the other horses had issues. She didn't know why he flipped out. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRgV3YkTUFaShNBmyUYQacK4HTnuItJov3bbNVAs1TOBIQ3nIVeqdDdmzRuUnlTdeqLcT2XB0V0Rj-w_cU2BvWxtM0_1P3zbHKvfQKK4dS3ZAjaIi_6ei2UC4B1ag5fXoNu82OfN3kGsWC/s1600/IMG_0219.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRgV3YkTUFaShNBmyUYQacK4HTnuItJov3bbNVAs1TOBIQ3nIVeqdDdmzRuUnlTdeqLcT2XB0V0Rj-w_cU2BvWxtM0_1P3zbHKvfQKK4dS3ZAjaIi_6ei2UC4B1ag5fXoNu82OfN3kGsWC/s640/IMG_0219.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Maybe I was in denial, but with his name change to "Teddy," having to track him through so many people, and the fact that he was a bay TB (very common), I wanted to be sure of his identity. I asked for the vet's name.<br />
<br />
This vet did not record any of the horse's info - no physical description, tattoo number, nothing. All she knew was that "he was handsome" and it was very sad. She didn't even know the date! It was sometime December 2015 or January 2016.<br />
<br />
So that is the story. He did not get the ending I was hoping for. His 3 years with me were probably the only time he had a committed human for any significant length of time.<br />
<br />
I spent a lot of time grieving for the ~year he spent bouncing around after leaving me. I'm now at a point where I can focus on all the good times we had together. He was my first OTTB and truly a pleasure to spend time with. While we grew apart in compatibility, we spent years enjoying each other that I will always cherish.<br />
<br />
And I hope he is waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge.<br />

<br />
Hi and Hello!<br />
<br />
I took a hiatus from blogging starting last fall.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For over a year I've been struggling with a number of symptoms which at first appeared to be due to the concussion from my <a href="http://eventingincolor.blogspot.com/2015/01/blood-stained-breeches.html">epic fall</a>. After a series of evaluations and tests, it turns out the issue was not a brain injury, but rather mental illness.<br />
<br />
My lack of blogging (and decline/sporadicity in reading others' blogs) has been due to anhedonia. That is is a common symptom of depression, where you lose interest in things that normally bring you joy, such as hobbies. So its a good sign that I'm looking to get back into blogging and other things that I know make me happy.<br />
<br />
I left off on the blog preparing for mine and Hannah's first horse trial together. We had a great time and even earned a pretty pink ribbon. :) Here's a few photos and below are the videos.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And congrats to <a href="http://fraidycateventing.blogspot.com/">'Fraidy Cat Eventing</a> for 1 year of blogging!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In my perfect world, the 2 weeks leading up to a horse trial is filled with extra barn time. A few more "serious" rides are substituted in for our casual hacks or bareback rides. More tack cleaning, boot cleaning, trailer cleaning, everything cleaning. Unfortunately I haven't been able to swing it this time due to some medical and family stuff going on. Even so, I feel ready and excited.</div>

<br />
I've printed my dressage test and I keep in my purse to review when I get a free minute.<br />

As for goals, there's 15 people in my division (Open Intro A), so going home with a ribbon would be lovely but improbable. Our goal is simply to get through all 3 phases and have fun.<br />

<span style="text-align: start;">Unlike our previous schoolings, this one as more of a supervised ride than a lesson. Hannah and I were off on our own and jumped whatever we wanted. They have a plethora of tiny jumps so it was the perfect opportunity for me to take it slow and only jump as high (low) as I felt comfortable. I didn't pressure myself, and my nerves stayed quite managed.</span><br />

It was a fabulous outing. I feel much better now about the upcoming horse trial.<br />

We did 2' and 2'3" jumper classes at the beautiful <a href="http://stradfarms.com/">Stradivarius Farms</a> in Santa Paula.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We did 3 rounds total. The first went well. </div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3mckrhxGOMM" width="420"></iframe>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was happy with how forward and relaxed we were for the entire round. We ended up 3rd out of 5. </div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Our next round didn't go as well. I was first to go in that class and I made a wrong turn. I ended up doing a series of awkward turns to get to the next jump. The judge thought we crossed our tracks (I disagree). However, one of the jumps was "backwards" (the fill and ground line was on the wrong side) so the judge allowed my round to count and they fixed the jump for all the other riders. Besides all that, I thought I rode okay. We got another yellow ribbon.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDvPI0npEj8RoFcviqLUIRhY11TQ5SOoleFw_qCvJKHENcsgNfZt8OOG-n2hP5dcKKB1ptczUHa3t7UREo6K1Y3OqtQA3tAX_DrtvymBMVEvGOHaVGFrsIYI5b7vPLQ9hP51FBjc4tfczS/s1600/Strad-jump-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="217" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDvPI0npEj8RoFcviqLUIRhY11TQ5SOoleFw_qCvJKHENcsgNfZt8OOG-n2hP5dcKKB1ptczUHa3t7UREo6K1Y3OqtQA3tAX_DrtvymBMVEvGOHaVGFrsIYI5b7vPLQ9hP51FBjc4tfczS/s320/Strad-jump-1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Our last round was also mixed. We started off totally in sync then we started chipping to the jumps, so I put my leg on and we finished strong. Only we didn't finish. I again forgot the course and stopped after the second-to-last jump! So we got disqualified. Womp womp.<br />
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
Overall I had a wonderful time. Hannah was foot perfect the entire day. I love that all our problems were with me, not my mount, and are totally fixable.</div>

Overall my husband is pretty supportive of the horse hobby. But he has concerns about my safety. <a href="http://eventingincolor.blogspot.com/2015/01/blood-stained-breeches.html">Legitimate concerns</a>.<br />
<br />
Over a year ago, he asked that I wear both my safety vests whenever jumping, not just XC. And I have, 99% of the time.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCB_ppYOx8iUpL2Ixx9AdkfYWJSchPMqNcF6dpQkcP1oYVpUckEFfp7JiC4yGugoZHelnZkAqmPwTbXwDZ0NZaO3T849249P7RwglzUC-jViLgvBrPVWKSh2uagTaY3bSTVpJ63AuABzXK/s1600/IMG_1736.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCB_ppYOx8iUpL2Ixx9AdkfYWJSchPMqNcF6dpQkcP1oYVpUckEFfp7JiC4yGugoZHelnZkAqmPwTbXwDZ0NZaO3T849249P7RwglzUC-jViLgvBrPVWKSh2uagTaY3bSTVpJ63AuABzXK/s640/IMG_1736.JPG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Point Two air vest over Tipperary impact vest.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
At our hunter show a few weeks ago, I brought my safety vests but decided not to wear them. While I'm not completely up on the rules in hunterland, I understand that "non-traditional" attire and tack counts against you in some classes. Looking around, there were dozens and dozens of riders - and not one had a safety vest of any kind.<br />
<br />
I decided to see how I felt in the warm-up and would put on the vests if I felt at all nervous. I felt fine. We warmed up and did 3 jump classes wearing traditional hunt attire and that was that.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHbXSNmJX-RoQs24VOtd-cohUdmcu_dXz4_r1MfoEpVW28GZHRlRmrzkjvr_DL-taI_Rf4Ju0obFKf-KfRTJ909QgT9WWOvyCKH2TMnhndjUWtfz2NGSnrasB-eNCZNais6W1-vW7texHC/s1600/EOF1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHbXSNmJX-RoQs24VOtd-cohUdmcu_dXz4_r1MfoEpVW28GZHRlRmrzkjvr_DL-taI_Rf4Ju0obFKf-KfRTJ909QgT9WWOvyCKH2TMnhndjUWtfz2NGSnrasB-eNCZNais6W1-vW7texHC/s640/EOF1.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Traditional, right? Except for the fleece girl? Close enough?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Hubs didn't make it to that show and was very bothered when he realized I didn't wear the vests. To him, a jump is a jump, and he doesn't know (or care) about hunters vs eventing vs jumpers vs whatever.<br />
<br />
So he gave me an ultimatum: I commit to wearing both vests <u>100%</u> of the time when jumping, or else he will not support the hobby: no more videoing, attending shows, or even chatting about how it went.He wasn't rude or pushy. He was concerned and said he didn't know how else to show me how strongly he feels about this.<br />
<br />
Putting myself in his shoes, I'd have similarly strong sentiments about him wearing safety gear when riding motorcycles, for example.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTaXa5yDNdnxLV31eShYA5JCwMIg1kSac7Po9zVMfBVfZ41DurcH4u42wCOoczrcftc77kLfAPC0kLMpcIjBqSQbvihxQVFmYHnZu5VNBo_CvZ146T_dO7iLEIjpS835hc_fU8Ai6YJXT7/s1600/IMG_2071.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTaXa5yDNdnxLV31eShYA5JCwMIg1kSac7Po9zVMfBVfZ41DurcH4u42wCOoczrcftc77kLfAPC0kLMpcIjBqSQbvihxQVFmYHnZu5VNBo_CvZ146T_dO7iLEIjpS835hc_fU8Ai6YJXT7/s400/IMG_2071.JPG" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Safety. So hot right now. Safety.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I already made a decision about it, and my trainer and barn-mate also came to the same exact conclusion as I did about it. I'll wear both vests 100% of the time. We'll stick to jumpers and eventing, but I'll probably pass on hunter shows; I'd be embarrassed to stick out.<br />
<br />
But I'm interested in <b>your opinion</b>. Kind of a sensitive subject, since it involves life-partner relationship, but important. How much does your partner's preferences impact your horse decisions? What if they feel very strongly vs. less strongly? What do you think about safety vests in general and what are your reasons for wearing or not wearing them?<br />
<br />
<i>Funny note, I'm such a cheapskate that the idea of spending ~$30 on a replacement air canister has been enough for me to somehow get my butt back into in the saddle after some hairy moments!</i><br />

On to a riding update. Following our <a href="http://eventingincolor.blogspot.com/2015/07/xc-schooling-2-nerves-galore.html">last XC schooling</a>, I was really touched by the encouragement and support for dealing with fear and anxiety. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Our jumping rides since then have been gymnastics with a focus on my body position and solidifying my lower leg. The height has stayed pretty low (2' - 2'3") which has been A-OK with me. </div>

I've said goodbye to my old friend, the neck strap. It took a few rides for me to get comfy without it; I used it for pretty much every single jump on Hemie. I no longer need the neck strap to remind me to keep my hands forward. I am releasing better over jumps and carrying my hands higher in general.<br />
<br />
Hannah continues to be a doll. She has her sassy moments, but overall I'm impressed with her patience and sense of humor when I get discombobulated or nervous.<br />
<br />
The other day I dropped a rein over the first jump of a 5-stride line. I pulled out of the line, but then regretted it. We would have been fine over that 2nd jump even if I couldn't manage to get my rein back in the 5 strides. It was a good feeling, realizing that I trust her to know and do her job.<br />

<br />
When my trainer first told me about Hannah, she used the name Moxie for her mistakenly (turns out Moxie was her dam, a mare my trainer was involved with years back). <br />
<br />
When I arrived to meet the mare, she was in the cross-ties getting groomed by an assistant trainer who sweetly called her Hannah Banana. I got a tingling feeling at the back of my neck. Even though at the time I thought I was meeting a horse named Moxie, I knew that this was the right horse and had a very strong feeling that she would become mine. You see, my first horse (and cherished heart-horse) was named Bo and one of my nicknames for him was Bo-Nana Banana.<br />
<br />
Now when I or others call her Hannah Banana it's a sweet reminder of my first horse.<br />

<br />
Amazingly, this isn't the first time I've had this kind of name deja-vu. I had it with Hemie too. <a href="http://eventingincolor.blogspot.com/2014/10/hand-gallop-blog-hop-whats-in-name.html">Here's that full story</a>.<br />
<br />
When Bo passed away many years ago, a friend told me that my future horses should somehow remind me of Bo. At the time this sounded offensive: no horse could ever remotely replace Bo! But now I love that advice because it's a way to honor his memory. For both the horses I've owned since Bo, I found out their names on the day I met them, and their names tied to him. I've always considered that a special gift from the universe.<br />

A while back I was contacted by <a href="http://www.giddyap.com/">Giddyup Girls</a> to try out and review their insect spray: <a href="http://www.giddyap.com/content.cfm?n=be_ready">Be Ready Safety Spray</a>. I've been using it for over 2 months, just as fly season was coming on strong in my area.<br />
<br />
What makes Be Ready spray unique is its focus on <i>safety:</i><br />
<ul>
<li>For the environment:</li>
<ul>
<li>won't harm bees or colonies (or other insects)</li>
<li>no DEET, pesticides, or insecticides</li>
</ul>
<li>For the users:</li>
<ul>
<li>safe on skin</li>
<li>safe to breathe (though I don't recommend it)</li>
<li>okay to use on humans and pets</li>
<li>doesn't stain clothes or equipment</li>
</ul>

Nowhere on the bottle or website is it called a "repellent" but that's what it does. The bugs listed are: bees, wasps, hornets, yellow-jackets, mosquitoes, flies, and gnats. These last 3 are what I deal with on a regular basis, though I do encounter the others on trail rides. It's a clear liquid that's not oily or sticky, and I spray it right over her body and on her splint boots. I apply it to her face using a rag or my palm.<br />
<br />

<br />
<u><b>Bottom line: it works great!!</b></u> From the moment I spray, bugs leave us alone. I have sprayed this stuff directly onto flies that were chilling on Hannah's legs, and they immediately flew away and didn't return. Hannah appreciates not having to stomp or swish, and it lasts at least 90 minutes (my average pony time). It works best on a groomed horse but works surprisingly well on a dirty, dusty horse too.<br />

However, it has a strong odor. Not a bad one, per se. In fact, others at the barn have said they like the smell. I've been smelling it for months and I still can't decide if I like or dislike the odor. It has a medicinal, herbal quality to it. But it lasts a long time - I can sometimes smell faint traces of it even 24 hours later.<br />

It currently only comes in a small 4-ounce bottle - the kind where you use your index finger to press down and you get a small mist area. I prefer larger bottles with whole-hand squirt levers and a larger spray area; however, the small size makes it convenient for fitting in a pocket, or for using it on yourself or a dog.<br />

Even though it's a small bottle, it is powerful stuff, so I think 2 bottles would last me through bug season, which is comparable to other larger bottles of fly spray. I really like that the bottle is clear and you can see how much liquid is left inside.<br />

The price is only $10.95 per bottle on the <a href="http://www.giddyap.com/content.cfm?n=be_ready">Giddyap Girls website</a>, and its starting to hit shelves in more stores and websites. I started out feeling relaxed and ready for a positive outing. <div>
<br /></div>

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcv_CutbkoygKPy1byCn50RLvbAbFssHvfoIjwkYJsgiFzULm073-slW0FgiX19WHas4lstsQZDG-sv2h5GAC9MlGcNCS8eKyty89F4u1oWHyvJaFM_4Rkjc6KQgw3giQUdTzK48aYTDok/s1600/IMG_1655.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcv_CutbkoygKPy1byCn50RLvbAbFssHvfoIjwkYJsgiFzULm073-slW0FgiX19WHas4lstsQZDG-sv2h5GAC9MlGcNCS8eKyty89F4u1oWHyvJaFM_4Rkjc6KQgw3giQUdTzK48aYTDok/s400/IMG_1655.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Unfortunately no media from XC, but here's a shot of our July 4th dress-up.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
We trotted and cantered around, and Hannah was feeling a little lazy but willing. We popped over a few tiny logs. I was feeling okay, but planned on sticking to the intro-sized jumps.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We headed to the water and while Hannah hesitated for ~10 seconds, she did go in without any help from the ground. This was certainly an improvement from our last outing, but at a show I'll school the water before trying to go through any flags.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Then it came time for a mini course: a tiny rounded wooden slat jump to a BN-sized box jump. I've jumped that BN jump before on Hemie, and I knew that Hannah could jump it no problem, but my nerves started to creep in. We got over both okay, but Hannah was behind my leg and I was rather ineffective at getting that corrected. We went around again, and this time I pushed her forward but let her get completely on the forehand and strung out - she politely refused/dodged out of the BN jump.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I knew what I needed to do. I know how to get her in front of my leg. Forward and back. Gallop and collect. Leg to hand.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But I just couldn't. My nerves were getting stronger and even though I knew in my head what to do, I simply couldn't make it happen. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We came around again, and somehow made it over the BN box, but I was so loose and backwards that I popped way out of the saddle. Miraculously I landed back in the saddle, but it was a very near thing.<br /><div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">From our last jump lesson.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Laurie got on Hannah before I could do any real damage to our trust. She rode her around for quite a bit to her in front of the leg and responsive, and even took her over a few jumps including some Novice jumps. She gave her back to me to cool off while our stablemates did some schooling.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Then we headed to the ditches. For whatever reason all the horses in our group thought they were terrifying and had some major struggles getting over. I got Hannah close a few times, the whole time basically shaking with nerves. Then Hannah tried stepping down into one (they're like 2 feet deep!) so Laurie got on again. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Laurie gave her the ride that I couldn't, and she got over the ditch. At first with an extra 3' height to spare, then like a normal pony. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I got back on and we were able to get over it together. Same with the other gals in our group. By that point we were all hot and tired and I was panicked that I was going to majorly screw things up. I simply wasn't riding like I knew I needed to, no matter how much I tried. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">From our last jump lesson.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br /><div>
To end on a more positive note, Laurie had us each go and jump 1 final jump - whatever we wanted. I picked a BN sized log that looked very welcoming, and we had a perfect approach and perfect jump. Phew. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
All in all it was a very short schooling, but I was drained from my own nervous energy. I am still very frustrated and disappointing in how much nerves I had. I thought I would be fine, or at least significantly improved from our first XC. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Oh well. As Laurie stated, if I spend a year at Intro then I spend a year at Intro. There's no hurry, it takes what it takes. And luckily Hannah has been a very willing partner. Even though she senses my nervousness, she hasn't taken advantage at all, and in fact has impressively helped me out sometimes. Good girl.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are so many organizations for horse owners and riders to join. From breed associations to local trail riding groups to national and even international bodies. So, here's the scoop on membership in the USEA, the US national organization for the sport of eventing, for both horses and humans.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>What is USEA?</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The USEA is a registered 501 C(3) non-profit educational organization. They have an office in Leesburg, Virginia, and have about 15 staff members. Led by a governing board of 20 people, they sanction registered competitions and implement a number of educational, safety, and award initiatives as well as development programs. Their mission is to advance the sport of eventing. Find more info at <a href="http://useventing.com/about">USEventing.com/about</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
USEA is a "Recognized International Discipline Association" of the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), the national governing body for equestrian sports. The USEA works in conjunction with the USEF to establish and implement policies and rules that govern eventing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Types of Membership (Human)</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><i>Full membership</i> - $85 per year (discounts for juniors age 18 or younger, and collegiate riders), grants eligibility to compete at registered events, participate in clinics and other USEA programs, and ability to earn points towards awards, leaderboards, and championships.</li>
<li><i>Life membership</i> - $1,500 one-time payment, same benefits as full membership.</li>
<li><i>Supporting membership</i> - $35 per year. For non-competitors, this is a way to support the organization.</li>
<li>Plus there's a magazine, newsletter, decal sticker, discounts at stores, etc. Find more info at <a href="http://useventing.com/membership">USEventing.com/membership</a>.</li>
<li>You can get a USEA ID number without being a member. This is used for the USEA online portal to do things such as register a horse.</li>

Pros: all the <a href="http://useventing.com/membership">membership benefits & perks</a> + the warm-fuzzies from supporting a non-profit dedicated to a sport you enjoy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Cons: it costs money. </div>

I am currently a USEA member and plan on continuing membership as long as I plan on doing registered events. If you have any questions about membership, please comment and I'll do my best to answer, or direct you to an official person at USEA. </div>

<b>Jumping</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO-miVt7F8rd9LpnEmgvKdOU3pan3Dql_SLKwthinZ2N3W9t1lQOLHuA66rgv5AizkW2Vto-m7-I7chRJ-75CCgfbfJb6m82zHCNJWh-F9aYpWzNZfe4N1B2bNGLVJdbgijfm3q_sVsCkw/s1600/jump-tack.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO-miVt7F8rd9LpnEmgvKdOU3pan3Dql_SLKwthinZ2N3W9t1lQOLHuA66rgv5AizkW2Vto-m7-I7chRJ-75CCgfbfJb6m82zHCNJWh-F9aYpWzNZfe4N1B2bNGLVJdbgijfm3q_sVsCkw/s640/jump-tack.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Saddle - Stubben Roxane<br />
Leathers - From an Amish store when a buddy lived in PA<br />
Irons - Regular fillis stainless steel<br />
Saddlepad - Back On Track AP pad<br />
Girth - Lettia cool-max click buckle girth<br />
Boots - Splint boots front and behind (black - hard to see), bell boots on fronts.<br />
Bridle - Not sure what it is precisely, it came with Hannah. But its a very nice standard hunter bridle that matches my saddle nicely.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Dressage</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcDuTvg2eA7_NNHy3SpjC68v-rftMXjUDezlQlRbf9LE-nNINun9oOzwJ-M5KDyOXFZJ5pSEbAYrZJ_OJ2EG9YR7sHUlKcowsu2-KZ2kyP1t-0VGkcz2buMC5Jh70hbtH2cZg5DKRNZMSw/s1600/dressage-tack.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="464" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcDuTvg2eA7_NNHy3SpjC68v-rftMXjUDezlQlRbf9LE-nNINun9oOzwJ-M5KDyOXFZJ5pSEbAYrZJ_OJ2EG9YR7sHUlKcowsu2-KZ2kyP1t-0VGkcz2buMC5Jh70hbtH2cZg5DKRNZMSw/s640/dressage-tack.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Literally the exact same setup as jumping except for:<br />
Saddle - Bates Isabel<br />
Girth - Wintec Pro Chafeless girth<br />
<br />
<br />
I'm sure our dressage setup will change before we hit the show ring so we can be more matchy-matchy. And I think we're going to start experimenting with different bits in general. But for now, this is what we are using. <br />
